What Are the Requirements For Becoming an Instacart Shopper or Driver?

This third aisle is pretty short and straight to the point. Lucky for you, there aren’t a lot of requirements for becoming an Instacart shopper or driver. This means pretty much anyone looking for a job can join Instacart. See below for requirements. We’ve broken this down based on Instacart position as described in the first section. 

Full-Service Shopper:

There are 5 basic requirements for becoming a full-service shopper:

  1. Be at least 18 years old or over.
  2. Be eligible to work in the United States.
  3. Have access to a vehicle.
  4. Have consistent access to and be able to effectively use a smartphone. The smartphone must be at least an iPhone 5 or Android 4.4 or newer.
  5. Be able to lift between 30 and 40 lbs with or without accommodations.

In-Store Shopper:

The requirements are very similar to those of the Full-Service shopper, but you don’t need a car!

  1. Be at least 18 years old or over.
  2. Be eligible to work in the United States.
  3. Have consistent access to and be able to effectively use a smartphone. The smartphone must be at least an iPhone 5 or Android 4.4 or newer.
  4. Be able to lift between 30 and 40 lbs with or without accommodations.

Told you there wasn’t many. To sign up to as an Instacart shopper and driver you will also need three things. First, a driver’s license (if driving). Second, your social security number handy. And finally, a checking account for direct deposit. These will be utilized in the sign-up steps.

How Do You Become An Instacart Shopper or Driver?

Step 1: Enter Basic Information

You’ve probably done something similar to this step a million times. And you probably have all the promotional junk emails to prove it. This first step is super simple. As the image below shows, simply enter the following information:

  • Cell Phone Number (Use the one you will be using for Instacart shopping.)

Step 2: Confirm Eligibility

As I explained in an earlier section, Instacart has certain requirements for becoming an Instacart shopper and driver. This step simply confirms that you meet these requirements. Check the box if you do indeed meet them.

Step 3: Confirm or Deny Vehicle Access

This step determines your eligibility for being a full-service shopper versus just an in-store shopper. Remember, in order to be a full-service shopper you must own a vehicle. Otherwise, you would not be able to make the deliveries. Simply select “yes” or “no” in the box.

Step 4: Indicate Smartphone Type

Next, if you remember from the eligibility requirements I outlined earlier, you must own a smartphone in order to accept orders as an Instacart shopper and driver. The smartphone must be at least an iPhone 5 or Android 4.4 or newer. This step confirms you meet this requirement. Select one of the three options: iPhone 5 or newer, Android OS 5.0 or newer, or neither.

Step 5: Download the Shopper App

After selecting next in the last step, you will be directed to a page that sends a link to your smartphone. They outline steps after download on this new page. Make sure you follow them, or it will not work and you will have problems later! Follow them, then return to this article for further instructions. The new page will look like the image below.

Step 6: Sign In to the App

To get started, open the newly installed Instacart Shopper App. Once open, select your preferred sign-in option. If you choose SMS, enter your phone number. You will receive a six-digit code (in text-message form) that you will enter. If you choose to log in with your password, you will have to enter your smartphone number and password.

Step 7: Complete 3 Simple Steps

In this step, there are three steps: Identity Verification, Verify Mailing Address and Sign the Paperwork. You will need your driver’s license, your social security number, and direct deposit information.

    1. Identity Verification – Here you need to provide a picture of your driver’s license, take a selfie, and verify information. You will have to wait 3-5 minutes for verification. The system for taking a photo is a little finicky, but don’t worry, you will have an option to upload your own picture.
    2. Verify Mailing Address – Here you will need to confirm the information you entered earlier. Simply click “Yes, the information is correct” if everything looks correct.
    3. Sign the Paperwork – In this step, you will need to sign the independent contractor agreement (also found here), sign the privacy policy, and complete a W-9. When done, you will also add direct deposit information.
